I still don't have all the answers to why or when Windows Vista, 7 and up will fail to boot. It has always been a mystery to me but I do want to share some tips. I have learned (even if I don't know exactly why something works). So in this example I will use C: \ for the Windows drive. I'm also assuming you don't have a System Reserved partition (if you do then use that drive letter- -make sure you assign one as if it's hidden by default it won't have a drive letter). First: If booting to a Windows Install CD or Windows Repair Disk make sure you run check diskpart first. When booting into recovery environment the drive letters WILL be all out of the order you are used to. I don't know why but it will reassign every drive letter (and even the C: \Windows partition could really be assigned anything). Make sure you take some. Second: No matter what partition the Windows installation is on, make sure you make that partition active. I usually do that while in diskpart but can really be done anytime before running bcdboot. Third: Run bootsect. Vista and above)bootsect. XP and below) so : bootsect. Setting active and running bootsect. You can check that by going back to diskpart and looking under the detail vol and/or detail disk to see if the drive is listed . Also useful if a bootable USB not booting. Run the above and check to see if now listed as . Depending on your computer and hardware specifics it's usually best to have the drive you want to boot listed as disk 0. On some older computers and motherboards they will not really boot well (or at all ) to other disk #'s. Make a BCD backup. I usually use savebcdbefore and savebcdafter in order to remember which is which. Keep in mind that saving it to. C: \windows drive is a little risky as seems to be easily corrupted. BootSect.exe /NT60 All Bcdedit.exe /create What is DEP? In Microsoft’s own words, Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other. Recently, I have shared you the fix about error which you can read using following link: The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information. Also you can make sure boot files are OK by copying from install disk or similar. The boot folder may or may not be hidden. I always unhide it (and Program. Data folder BTW) by running: attrib vol - s - h - r c: \bootyou can reset it to hidden if you want later by just changing the - to a + for above cmd. When you finally get to running bcdboot I found most helpful in Win 8 and up to run it as: bcdboot c: \windows /s c: /f all /v (if a system reserved partition then substitute that drive letter the second instance of c: )IF dual boot and the harddrive you are trying to get bootable I still do all the above but run: bcdboot d: \windows /s d: /f all /v (where D is the drive I'm trying to boot to). If Windows 7 then just run: bcdboot c: \windows /s c: I was very slow to move to Win 8. I can't stand the (lack of) F8 bootmenu. I probably would have tried it much sooner had I known the (correct) way to change Win 8 and up bootmenu policy. I had always known that if booted (safe or regular. I could change the bootmenu policy by running: bcdedit /set bootmenupolicy legacybut I struggled because that cmd does not work in the recovery environment. Just recently learned that it does work if you run: bcdedit /set . Sometimes I get calls from the helpdesk staff asking about the Windows Resume Loader issue. It happens with Windows 7 or Vista OS computers during the startup process. I’m using windows vista 32 and i wanted to disable the DEP. I entered the right command into the CMD and it said that it was a success. But it seems that the DEP is. Found that on here. Finally, I usually have some older hardware that may give problems with BSOD so I will usually run these as well: (use at your own risk)bcdedit /set loadoptions . Here are the steps. You do this when you cannot boot to Windows XP after installing Windows 7 or Windows Vista. Open an elevated command prompt. Type the following to create a boot loader for Windows XP. I used D: in this example. Replace it with the drive letter of your XP installation. Build a Bootable BCD from Scratch with Bcdedit In . Once Bootmgr starts up, though, it needs some marching orders, and it gets those from a binary file called the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) file , which usually lives in a folder named \boot on the active partition. You use Bcdedit to configure the BCD file. You've already read about Bcdedit in my explanations of how to create or modify “OS entries” (instructions for how to boot OSs on the system’s hard drives), but all I’ve really explained so far is how to use Bcdedit to modify an existing BCD. This month, I'll show you how to build a bootable BCD from scratch. A working BCD file typically contains at least two objects. First, it has a Boot Manager, which contains overall boot information such as which OS entry to boot by default and the amount of seconds to wait for the user if more than one OS entry exists. Second, it contains at least one OS entry. Here’s how to create them. Start by deleting any existing BCD files and creating a new empty BCD file. Bcdedit quirkily requires you to first create a new BCD file somewhere and then “import” it—a process that copies whatever is in the new BCD file into the “official” BCD file in \boot on the active volume. You can do that by typing two commands into an elevated command prompt: bcdedit /createstore bcdbcdedit /import bcd These commands work whether you already have a \boot\bcd in place or if you’re working from a toasted boot volume that lacks any BCD file at all. Now that you’ve done that, the “sacrificial. You’ll use the former quite often in BCD work and the latter much less so. The /create option lets Bcdedit create several different kinds of BCD objects. Invoking it with the . It’s superfluous when creating a Boot Manager object.)The Boot Manager doesn’t need much tweaking, but it does need to know what volume to boot from and how many seconds to wait for a user to choose an OS option. These options will work fine: bcdedit /set . That volume is usually C, but if you’re booted from Windows Preinstallation Environment (Win. PE), double- check which drive has the \Windows folder on it—Win. PE might see it as D or E. Look at the output of Bcdedit on a healthy copy of Windows, and use it as a model. In my case, the \Windows folder is on drive D, so I entered these: bcdedit /set !

The location of the Temporary Internet Files folder depends on the version of Windows and whether or not you are. Why is my flash drive write- protected and how can I format it? I have a 8. GB Gernade Flash Drive that “became write- protected” as I was in the middle of transferring data. I have tried many solutions, but I have no idea what is wrong and it seems like this is happening to a lot of people. Things I have already tried: I opened Computer Management and double clicked Disk Management. USB flash drive and security - explains how to protect the contents of a USB stick. Both hardware and software solutions are discussed.I right clicked the drive and selected “Format. But I got the Error “the operation did not complete because the media is write- protected” I tried selecting the drive and right clicking on the partition, but “delete Partition” was not selectable and “Format. Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected.”I also ran the command prompt and typed, “diskpart”. In the DISKPART> prompt I typed, “list volume.” selected the volume (in my case volume 2) and typed “attributes volume clear read only” It just gives me a list of the possible commands for diskpart and prompts me again with DISKPART> (I have tried running diskpart on a windows 7 computer and I was able to type, “attributes volume” and get a list of the attributes. Readonly along with all the other options available said value : NO. When I typed “attributes volume clear readonly” it game me an error saying the operation is not supported on removable media.)I have run regedit and created key “Storage. Device. Policies” and DWORD “Write. Protect” and set the value at 0 (it did not exsist originally)I have tried downloading Neo. I run the application it says, “USB Flash Disk not found!”(I also tried running Neo. I downloaded the HDD low level format tool. When I ran the program and selected my disk there was a message where the details should be, “Details are unavailable for this device” I run, “FORMAT THIS DEVICE” and hit okay when it warns me that all my data will be lost. You're all finished for the day. Suddenly, your USB drive throws up a Write Protection error. Where did it come from? More importantly, how can you fix it? A USB flash drive, also variously known as a USB drive, USB stick, thumb drive, pen drive, jump drive, disk key, disk on key, flash-drive, memory stick or USB memory. While it is running it gives me hundreds of messages, “2/7/2. PM Format Error Occurred at offset 3. The media is wrte protected” Obviously the date and offset changed as it continued. The how to site with this program said it may take a few tries so I tried 5 times on a windows 7 computer and once on a Windows XP. The same result occured with both. I don’t know if this is relevant. Some more information that probably isn’t relevant: I bought a 8. GB Gernade Flash Drive from Thinkgeek. Specifically MP3’s. I got 3. 6. GB of music on it when it stopped, mid tranferring data, and gave me the error, “Cannot copy data: this disk is write- protected. Thumbscrew is a freeware application that lets you write protect your USB drive so that virus, Malware, Trojan or any kind of infection from host computer. 330 Replies to “Solution to remove Write Protection from USB Pen Drive”. Q: I’m the only user of my Windows computer. I have a USB flash drive where I keep personal pictures and emails from friends. My old Windows XP computer let me save. Remove the write- protection or use another disk.” As soon as I got that error I could no longer add, or remove any files. There is no button or switch on the flash drive. I have tried plugging it into Windows XP, Windows 7, and even Windows Vista, but all said it was write protected. I was using Windows XP when it suddenly became write- protected, and attempted most of my solutions on the same Windows XP computer. I tried every solution listed above on the XP and tried most of them on Windows 7 as well. In “My Computer” the drive used to be found under “Devices with removable storage” but now it is located in “Network Drives” However, when I plug it into Windows 7 it still is located under, “Devices with Removable Storage”I have scanned the drive and found no viruses. I know the files I put on there had no viruses. I did not download anything or even access the internet while my drive was plugged in, before it became write protected, so I do not think it is any kind of virus. The Manufacturer gave me this website //www. I began searching for solutions. None on that page helped me, nor did the links provided in the comments have any working solutions. If anyone has any suggestions please, PLEASE, let me know! Any way to re- format it, or just completely wipe it clean and re- install the drives, or if you just have a suggestion that wasn’t listed above. Thanks for your help! Why Windows Vista (SP1+) is Better Than Windows 7. You’ve been brainwashed. Brainwashed by clever marketing and the classic underpromise- and- overdeliver strategy employed by Microsoft to fix the mistakes they made with Vista. Master Tutorial to Make Windows Vista Super Fast. If you are using Windows Vista and feel that its slower than Windows XP, you have come to the right place.
I know, I know, everyone told you Vista was bad. You maybe even used Vista pre- SP1, on a “Vista Capable” machine way back when it launched and concluded that it was horrible. Or, maybe you heard all the bad press and skipped on it altogether? Stuck with XP, then switched straight to 7. Is that what you did? Well, regardless, I am convinced that Vista is the superior operating system. So vastly superior, that I am going out of my way to ensure that it replaces all the systems that I have been tricked into installing Windows 7 on. At work, at home, and for my clients. I am going to make an argument in this article as to why I believe that Vista remains superior. I challenge someone to list 7 reasons why Windows 7 is better than Windows Vista. Actual reasons. Those could easily be implemented into Vista, if it were not abandoned in the wake of Windows 7 by the new CEO, Steve Ballmer. So, we begin with a mini history lesson: Windows Vista was a major disaster. The Windows Aero Glass interface for Windows 7 or Vista requires a decent video card, you won’t be able to use it on an old clunker computer. For those worried. Microsoft suffered from heavily over promising on features (remember Win. FS?) and failing to live up to their own hype; and they really hyped it up. Naturally, normal people don’t care or know when a new Microsoft operating system is launched, but the tech community does. So, to over- promise and under deliver, and miss your self- imposed deadlines again and again, the disappointment becomes palpable. At the time, 6. 4- bit processors were becoming more ubiquitous, and Windows XP 6. Edition had a plethora of issues with drivers and was not widely adopted — so they were under immense pressure to release the OS. Vista Beta 2 came out in 2. If you looked at it funny, or moved the mouse too quickly, it would crash. It was completely unusable, but Microsoft insisted that it was intentional, and that they were planning to fix all of the bugs at once, at the end, prior to RTM. They did, although there was still the issues of heavy disk I/O in the final RTM as well as a large number of driver issues in the final versions. Much of the problems with Vista stemmed from an overzealous Search Indexer, incomplete drivers from third party manufacturers, UAC, and underpowered systems. RAM was still moderately expensive at the time, and Vista did not work very well with only 1. GB, which was common on low- end systems. After Beta 2, Microsoft shipped release candidate versions and finally the RTM. They continued to fix all of the issues rapidly, releasing patch after patch. All the while, Vista was hammered in the press, blogs and forums repeatedly for problems stemming from the aforementioned. This negative press was not without merit. Vista was truly very slow, and despite the improvements, they felt minor in the face of a computer that was so severely hampered. Especially when the computer was branded as: Vista Capable. Finally, with Vista Service Pack 1 (2/2. However, plagued by the hasty launch, not enough enticing features over XP, and an insipid ad campaign (“the wow starts now“), there were very few who gave it a second review. Microsoft later attempted to “prove” that they had fixed Vista with the Mojave Experiment, in which they secretly video taped people who had heard that Vista was bad, and had them interact with a supposed “new” operating system codenamed “Mojave.” Evidently, over 9. XP and/or Vista, and expressed shock/surprise when informed that they were actually using regular . Of course, bias is to be expected. After the release of Service Pack 2 (4/2. Windows 7. None of this ever made it to the press because Windows 7 was under- hyped, under- promised and over- delivered by releasing early, since Microsoft learned their lessons with Vista. Moreover, Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” ad- campaign for 7 was well executed. So, what’s wrong with Windows 7? Why have I become so negative about it? Here’s 7 reasons why I think Windows 7 is a downgrade from Windows Vista (asterisks denote a subjective comment): 1. Windows 7 removes features. What’s missing? Well, where’d the Quick. Launch go? Oh, right, it got consumed into the massive start menu. Where’d the Show Desktop icon go? Moved, to the right hand side (this drives a lot of people batty, believe it or not). Windows Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Dream. Scene, just to name a few, no longer come with the OS, they have to be downloaded manually with “Windows Live Essentials” (except for Dream. Scene, which is totally gone. All system tray icons are hidden by default. Is this a problem? I think it is. Microsoft’s attempt to unclutter the taskbar by hiding all third party systemtray icons is a nuisance. How many times have you had to try to explain to someone to “click the little arrow to the left” over the phone to a client, family member, or friend? Hiding all systemtray icons does little in the way of solving the “problem” of the systemtray. As a result, I often find myself just showing all icons on the systems I administer and repair. Libraries. After much annoyance, I finally get libraries. I understand why they exist. I even think it’s a semi- cool idea . Try and copy the path of a file you’re looking at within a Windows 7 Library into another Explorer dialog box. What’s that? You can’t? Well that’s aggravating because everytime you click a shortcut like Music on your start menu, it takes you to the music Library, even if you just have one Music folder! Can you replace the shortcut on the Start menu to go directly to your Music folder? I won’t add a separate section, but Home. Groups annoy me in a similar fashion. I’m sure they’re great for some people — but in general, I just get a lot of “what’s homegroup?!” from people trying to do very basic filesharing across their networks. Windows Media Player 1. Have you used Windows Media Player 1. It’s pretty simple to use. Yes, the defaults are still annoying, but the interface is vastly superior. Try it yourself. Use WMP 1. The illogical layout of the software is mind boggling to me. This isn’t exactly a Windows 7 issue per se, but since Microsoft made a specific decision to remove WMP 1. I find it worth mentioning. Also, it looks like you can fix it here. Search. This, for me, is the real trouble with Windows 7. In Windows XP, you can download the optional search indexer from Windows Update. Its heyday was really with the search add- on version 2. In Vista, Microsoft took it to the next level by deeply integrating the indexer and the UI throughout the operating system. Vista’s search solution, once the Indexer was optimized with SP1+, is very powerful and incredibly easy to fine tune. Observe the control you can exert over your search in Vista: Now, let’s juxtapose this with Windows 7’s search “improvements”: So, here is what I can’t do with Windows 7’s search: – Force a search in a non- indexed, or partially indexed location. So, let’s say you just added a folder and want to do a quick search in Windows 7. So you’re screwed. This is a constant problem that I run into all the damn time.– Change the search path without first performing a search, and then scrolling to the very bottom of the search results. Who was the genius who designed this?– Perform complex filters quickly. In 7, I have to use that awkward drop- down menu to manually select each filter, and then scroll back to the left to change my search parameters. This is incredibly cumbersome and unintuitive. Totally fails the grandma test. In Vista, if I want to find a song, I just type one word of the song and then click the “Music” button and bam — it appears immediately.– Inconsistent search- related glitches (see also Bugs, #6, below) which for whatever reason cause known search results not to materialize. Video evidence of this that I documented is here, on a fully patched, legally licensed, MSDN version of Windows 7 Ultimate. I’m not the only one complaining, either. This is a real problem that simply didn’t exist before 7.– Oh, and see how the text becomes blue in the search box once I type the word “in”? Well that’s because Windows 7 thinks that I am using a search “operator,” and thus it is not returning any results. If I type the exact same search query into Vista’s search box, it would return results. In order for me to make 7 search for the word “in” I have to put it in quotes in order to “tell” 7 to search it, and not to use it as an operator. Do you think your clients are going to figure that out? I doubt it. 6. Bugs that never get fixed. Microsoft has the capability to fix problems. They proved that with Vista. In my years with Vista, I observed Microsoft fix the operating system relatively quickly. Each problem slowly disappeared, and by the time SP2 hit, nearly everything that was a concern vanished. Yet somehow, that isn’t happening with Windows 7. My biggest #1 problem with Windows 7 is the Explorer refreshing bug. Have a look at that link. You’ll find that this is a bug that has persisted throughout every single version of Windows 7, and despite innumerable complaints, it isn’t fixed. Windows 7 launched in 2. I have lost track of how many times I have had to explain to clients that the reason why the file that they saved to the desktop/folder isn’t appearing is because it sometimes won’t refresh automatically and that they have to right click and hit refresh or press F5. Of course, F5 won’t work on Microsoft keyboards because you have to first press F- Lock to enable standard keyboard behavior. This is aggravating, and Microsoft appears unable or unwilling to fix bugs of this magnitude, despite their brilliant engineers on staff. Other bugs are equally frustrating. For example, after installing a completely legal MSDN version of Windows 7 Ultimate, with keys from Microsoft, activated and operating for a few months, Microsoft released an optional hotfix to determine if your specific instance of Windows had been illegally activated. Why Windows Vista (SP1+) is Better Than Windows 7. You’ve been brainwashed. Brainwashed by clever marketing and the classic underpromise- and- overdeliver strategy employed by Microsoft to fix the mistakes they made with Vista. Tweaking enables you to make Windows 7 do interesting and useful things that it doesn't necessarily do directly out of the box. Some tweaks are easier to action than. Wonderful to hear all the people that still believe Windows Vista is a better OS! I just upgraded my main system for photography videography to an ASUS X79. We have many Windows 8 themes on our site for XP, Vista and also for Windows 7 that you can download for free. Because there are so many themes it gets a bit.
